North Rim to South Rim Trip

Bright and early in the morning I set out on not only my first rim to rim trip, but my first 3 day hike and backpack trip. This is an all girls trip and I am going with two very good friends. The girls took a van to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon today and will be driving back to Fredonia tonight. We will begin our adventure on the North Kaibab Trail at the North Rim.

I am finding it difficult to stuff everything I want to take in a pack that is light enough I want to carry it. After putting my sleeping bag into my fancy new ultralight backpack there is not room for much more. I have been told to bring a tent since there is a good chance of rain during out trip so I am trying to cram that into the pack as well. The most important thing to me is a comfortable mat so it is given priority next to the sleeping bag. After shoving everything down tight I managed to get a sleeping bag, a tent, a nice comfortable mat, my camera equipment, water and food into the pack. I have some clothes sitting outside the pack that I am determined to find a place for as well.

I have not yet lifted the thing up and tried to carry it, after hiking all over Zion, Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with my light day pack and camel water bag I think this is going to put a real damper in my usual hiking pace.

I am looking forward to our trip. Our first night is at the Cottonwood Campground, the second night a bunkhouse near Phantom Ranch and then we will hike out the next morning.
